We all have the little b**ch of an inner critic. That voice which says ‘you’re fat’, ‘you’re ugly’, ‘you can’t do this’… the voice which constantly criticises and judges us.
This is your subconscious speaking, these negative thoughts have been building up over a long period of time, and as a result have become automatic and ingrained into your core belief system. They have become your truth, your reality.
These thoughts are deeply damaging, and influence our overall mental health and well-being and therefore quality of life.
Our thoughts can be incredibly powerful if we give them attention. With an influx of thoughts such as the above. Take ‘I’m not good enough’ for example. This will result in you feeling really bad about yourself, possibly feeling unworthy, unattractive, stupid, unlovable the list goes on…
As a result of feeling bad, unworthy or stupid- this will impact on how you behave, act and show up. This might result in you deciding that you can’t put yourself forward for a project at work because you believe you aren’t good enough anyway - so what’s the point? Or you might not try and go to a gym class, because you believe this will make you feel even worse about yourself and you will look stupid against others. You may end up procrastinating, putting things off and then notice these feelings of anxiety, stress and sadness begin to grow and become your automatic state.
You can see from this example that it is easy to get stuck in a pit of negativity. With your thoughts leading to feelings, which then fuel your actions.
Something which started out as a thought has become a belief, and is now the lens through which you see your life. It has determined how you might define and identify yourself.
You can see from this example how your thoughts manifest into your reality. You can see how what you think is what you become.
So here is the GOOD news. If you can think negative thoughts, and create negative beliefs…you also have the capacity to think positive thoughts, create positive and empowering beliefs and as a result live a happy, fulfilling and wonderful life that makes you feel great.
YOUR MIND IS INCREDIBLY POWERFUL. And whilst sh*t happens, and there are certain things out of your control…. You always have the choice when it comets responding to a situation.
You have the power to change your thoughts. Which in return will shape your beliefs and lead to more positive, empowering and productive behaviour.
There are many tools and techniques available to help shift your thought patterns and rewire your brain. Here are some ideas to get you going…
1. Become Aware of what these repetitive negative thoughts are and the feeling they create. It is important to have this awareness, and to accept them in a non-judgmental way rather than suppressing them.
2. Challenge your inner critic. Ask yourself ‘Is this true?’, ‘Do I have any evidence that really backs this up?’
3. Affirmations or Mantra’s - choose words which enable you to engage and focus more on the positive i.e. ‘I am enough’, ‘I choose to know that I am doing my best’…
4. Gratitude - start shifting your focus towards the things that you are grateful for, the things you do have in your life. This is turn will start to bring more positive feelings, and steer you away from the negative thoughts and feelings.
5. Change your environment -take a walking nature, surround yourself with people homage you feel inspired and uplifted.
These are just a few ideas. As with anything in life, it takes practice and repetition to start rewiring the brain to think and believe differently. It is important to be patient and also to trust that you are transforming your mindset and becoming the version of yourself you truly want to become-as long as you are putting the work in.
